PRESS RELEASE FROM V&A AT DUNDEE

Modern Masters in Print: Matisse, Picasso, Dali and Warhol

Exhibition: Friday 23 August to Sunday 17 November 2013

The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum.

Prints by Picasso, Dalí, Matisse, and Warhol – four of the 20th century’s greatest artists – will be displayed in Dundee later this year in an exhibition from the V&A.

'Modern Masters in Print: Matisse, Picasso, Dalí and Warhol’ is the latest in a series of exhibitions being held at The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum in the lead up to the opening of V&A at Dundee.

“These 'modern masters’ each had a profound influence in the art world, but also beyond. Their legacy pervades our culture,” said V&A curator Gill Saunders.  “All four were also accomplished printmakers, using the medium to reach a wider audience.

“Together, these four artists spanned a 75-year period that saw the birth of the modern age. They employed a wide range of techniques, and their work represents one of the most creative and diverse periods of printmaking in the history of western art.”

Drawn from the V&A’s outstanding collections of prints, posters and artists’ books, Modern Masters showcases their work in print. The exhibition will highlight the different ways in which each of these four artists used the medium of print.

For Matisse and Picasso, printmaking was one of the many artistic media they employed, and one which they used to explore themes and motifs from other areas of their work. For Dalí, printmaking was an exercise in experimentation, through which he developed many imaginative new processes. Warhol’s prints were his primary means of expression and central to his work. His screen-prints based on mass-produced images challenged the concept of the ‘original’ print.

Lord Provost Bob Duncan, chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee, said, “This is another exciting exhibition for The McManus. People are responding enthusiastically to the benefits of our close partnership with the V&A.

“The McManus is becoming widely known as a quality destination and this exhibition is an outstanding attraction to bring visitors to the galleries and the city.”

Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee, said, “Printmaking is a fascinating medium and this outstanding exhibition allows a real insight into the energy and creativity of the period. Modern Masters is a fabulous opportunity to see work from four true exemplars of printmaking and we are delighted that the city’s audiences will have the chance to be inspired by the originality and invention of the work on display.”

The exhibition will run from Friday 23 August to Sunday 17 November 2013 at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum.

Admission free.

Opening hours:

Mon – Sat 10am – 5pm

Sun 12.30 – 4.40pm

Reception: 01382 307200

The exhibition is one of a series of city-wide events coinciding with the prestigious international print conference 'Impact 8', which is being hosted by the University of Dundee.

Additional information:

Henri Matisse

Matisse came to painting comparatively late in life, and to printmaking even later. Although for Matisse in his paintings colour was all important, most of his prints are masterpieces of fluent line and subtle tones achieved purely in black and white. They also show his preoccupation with the nude, a genre he constantly reworked.

Matisse’s prints reveal his continual desire to create works that would offer the viewer an experience of peace and tranquillity, without the distraction of the bright palette of his oils.

Pablo Picasso

Picasso had no formal training in printmaking but he quickly learned through a process of trial and error, mastering numerous printmaking techniques with ease. As prolific in the printed medium as he was in the many other media he practised, Picasso produced over 2000 prints ranging from etchings to linocuts. He took full advantage of the opportunities offered by diverse printmaking techniques, employing different modes of impression to suit different themes. Picasso’s continuously evolving style can be charted in his prints. The etchings and aquatints of his maturity are confident and spirited, reiterating themes from his painting and sculpture in a manner both playful and profound.

Salvador Dalí

Dalí was experimental in his printmaking, perhaps placing an even greater emphasis on exploring techniques than on developing compositions. One of his innovative approaches involved setting off a bomb filled with nails and keys next to an engraving plate, which when printed would give the impressions unique markings. Dalí made fine art prints, but also designed posters, such as the vibrant surrealistic ‘collages’ used to promote the French railways in the 1960s.

Andy Warhol

Warhol’s prints were his main creative output, one from which his other artistic activities took their cue. His practice was informed by his early career as a commercial illustrator, when he conceived designs for mass-reproduction in magazines and newspapers. His screenprints appropriate symbols and icons from North American popular culture. For Andy Warhol, the use of a repeated motif was fundamental to every aspect of his work, with even his paintings incorporating printed imagery. Screen-printing – initially a commercial print process – was well-suited to his practice of appropriating images he found in advertising, the cinema, on television, and in the press, whether it was the iconic face of Marilyn Monroe, the figure of Jackie Kennedy, or graphic footage of Civil Rights protests.

Innovative British designer Sebastian Conran will talk about his long and illustrious career at a public lecture in Dundee later this month.

He will also explore how the UK could do better at industrialising it's world-leading innovation. Conran firmly believes this issue can in part be resolved by viewing design as a strategic process of 'making ideas happen', or 'science successful'.

To do this, 'design thinking' needs to be integrated at the very beginning of the innovation journey in order to create value, rather than being used superficially at the end of the process as marketing 'packaging'.

This lecture is the first in a series of joint events hosted by Design In Action - the Arts & Humanities Research Council knowledge exchange hub based at the University of Dundee - and V&A at Dundee. The series aims to enhance the reputation, status and understanding of design in modern day Scotland, underlining its potential for economic growth.

The lecture takes place in the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, on Monday 22nd April at 6pm. Tickets are free but booking is advised, by phoning 01382 385564 / 385108, via email at events@dundee.ac.uk or online at www.dundee.ac.uk/tickets.

PRESS RELEASE FROM V&A AT DUNDEE - PRIVATE FUNDING BOOST

V&A at Dundee can today announce that it has raised £4million in private donations. The money represents another major step towards realising the project's fundraising target of £45m.

V&A AT DUNDEE ANNOUNCES £4million PRIVATE FUNDING BOOST

V&A at Dundee can today announce that it has raised £4million in private donations. The money represents another major step towards realising the project’s fundraising target of £45m.

The Scottish Government has already committed £15million in capital funding, and the Heritage Lottery Fund has given V&A at Dundee a first-phase pass on a bid of up to £9.2million. Further bids to other public bodies are on track and work will continue in developing discussions with prospective donors.

“The private donations announced today mean the project is well on its way to achieving the £45million fundraising target,” said Sandy Richardson, Development Director of V&A at Dundee.

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to make this announcement and are extremely grateful to those individuals and organisations who are supporting the project. It is a wonderful show of confidence in V&A at Dundee.”

Donations have been received from individuals, trusts and foundations. Among those who have donated are W S Philips Charitable Trust, Leng Charitable Trust, Misses Barrie Charitable Trust, Binks Trust, and Dunard Fund. Some donors have chosen to remain anonymous.

The funding announcement comes as the project displays its latest building plans as part of a new exhibition open to the public between the 17th  and 19th January from 10am to 4pm at Bernard King Library, University of Abertay, Dundee.

Outline plans for the new site alongside the latest visuals and vision for the project will be on display.  Visitors will be encouraged to share their views with staff across the three days.

Architect Kengo Kuma’s revised plans show V&A at Dundee moving shorewards - closer to the RSS Discovery and other city attractions and into the heart of Dundee’s redeveloped central waterfront.  The plans also detail the way in which the iconic building, created of two separate structures arching up to meet each other will be built within two pools of water, reinforcing the connection between the building and the River Tay.

Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee, said, “We remain absolutely committed to developing an outstanding building to good time and on budget. Our proposal for the location of the building gives Dundee greater certainty of this, while retaining the integrity of Kengo Kuma's design for a new institution of national importance. We are looking forward to sharing with the public these latest plans, and are delighted to report such good progress is being made on fundraising.”

This is the first time the amended plans will be on show to the public. The revised planning application will be lodged with Dundee City Council later this year following the 12 week public consultation period.

V&A AT DUNDEE PRESS RELEASE l PLANNING APPLICATION NOTICE LODGED

The latest plans for V&A at Dundee will go on public display in Dundee early in the New Year.

Detailed proposals for the project will be on show at the Bernard King Library, University of Abertay Dundee, on January 17, 18 and 19, from 10am to 4pm each day.

Plans for the new site plus the latest flythrough and visuals will be on display, and visitors will be encouraged to share their views with staff across the three days.

“I am very excited about the latest plans for the project and I look forward to sharing these with the public in January,” said Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee. “Our architect Kengo Kuma was here in Dundee last week to present us with the latest refinements to his vision for the building.

“In tandem with developing the designs for the building, we are continuing to make very good progress on the content and programme for the wider project, which will have an impact right across Scotland and beyond. The consultation provides a great opportunity to share these plans with the public too.”

A new Planning Application Notice for the project has been lodged with Dundee City Council, ahead of a full revised planning application taking into account the previously announced decision to move the building further on to the shore, at the heart of Dundee’s redeveloped waterfront.

Kengo Kuma has already spoken of how he feels the move will create an even greater connection between the project and the surrounding environment, including the RRS Discovery, the new railway station and on to the city centre.

The venue for the public consultation is the same as was used for the initial display of competition entries for the project in 2010, which attracted around 15,000 visitors.

V&A AT DUNDEE PRESS RELEASE - Latest design proposals for V&A at Dundee revealed

The latest design proposals for V&A at Dundee have been revealed, which would bring the building closer to the heart of Dundee's redeveloped central waterfront.

V&A at Dundee Press Release, 12 October 2012

The latest design proposals for V&A at Dundee have been revealed, which would bring the building closer to the heart of Dundee’s redeveloped central waterfront.

The move would see V&A at Dundee sitting on the western half of the site currently occupied by the Olympia leisure centre, with the `prow’ of the building extending over the River Tay.

The proposal is still to be considered by the Design Dundee Ltd board, which will make a final decision on the proposal.

Philip Long, Director of the V&A at Dundee, said, “We are proposing to bring the building on to the shore, strengthening the connection between the river and the city centre.

“This may bring a wide range of benefits for the project and the wider waterfront development. It gives us greater certainty with regards to the building schedule while retaining the quality of the overall design, which is absolutely paramount.

“The design process is one of continual refinements and updates and we are fortunate to be working with a very experienced team who are helping us deliver a very exciting project.”

Maurizio Mucciola, of Kengo Kuma & Associates, said, “We have made some changes to the site plan, in full consultation with our project team. While retaining the original concept of our project and the qualities of the building, the new site plan will tighten the relationship of V&A at Dundee with the river and the city centre, and help connect the two with a sequence of quality public spaces around the building.”

The £45million project will retain its place at the heart of Dundee’s central waterfront, which is currently undergoing a £1billion transformation.

Mike Galloway, Director of City Development, said, “There are many challenges in delivering a project of the scale of the waterfront development and in building something as notable as V&A at Dundee. This proposal satisfies the demands of both, delivering a vibrant heart to the waterfront project.

“These are very exciting times for Dundee, re-establishing the historic connections of the city to its river.”

Construction of V&A at Dundee is expected to begin in 2013. The successful completion of a new swimming pool at East Whale Lane will allow the imminent demolition of the Olympia centre and clearance of the site, ready for work to begin on V&A at Dundee.

Martin Kemp is Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at the University of Oxford and one of the world’s leading experts on Leonardo. In the light of this, he will demonstrate how connections can be drawn between seemingly unrelated works such as the Mona Lisa and the flying machine.

The public lecture is being hosted by V&A at Dundee in partnership with the University of Dundee and Leisure & Culture Dundee.

V&A AT DUNDEE JOINS WITH HOBBYHOUSE FOR DESIGNMARKET 2012

The latest developments in the V&A at Dundee project will be on show at DesignMarket in Edinburgh later this month, presented in innovative fashion thanks to a partnership with a Dundee University graduate.

V&A at Dundee was invited to take part in the event by The Fruitmarket Gallery, who run a series of markets creating a platform for artists and makers. The latest in the series, DesignMarket, takes place from July 13th to 15th where designers fill the galleries with work for sale and inspiration.

The project will not only share the floor with up and coming design talent from across the country but is actively engaging with recent graduate Karen Lyttle for its display.

Karen, who graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design this year, has established the company HobbyHouse, which uses a portable, multi-functional pop-up pavilion to showcase new ideas, and which will also allow people to give their views on the project's development.

“We are delighted to be working with graduate talent such as HobbyHouse; this sort of collaboration helps the development of V&A at Dundee and gives an opportunity to a young designer to be involved,” said Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee; “Scotland is full of outstanding creative talents and it's V&A at Dundee's ambition to work with cultural organisations across the country to draw new attention to our design community.”

Karen Lyttle of HobbyHouse said, “Having very recently graduated from DJCAD, it is very exciting to be asked to work with V&A at Dundee. The aim of my project throughout the final year of Interior and Environmental Design was to ‘connect communities creatively’ and raise an awareness of design and craft - and V&A at Dundee - to the people of the city of Dundee. Being asked to work with V&A at Dundee to help promote it to a wider audience is a dream job coming true and I am really looking forward to the DesignMarket weekend and hopefully many more future events and adventures.”

The Fruitmarket Gallery approached V&A at Dundee to take part in DesignMarket after seeing Philip Long present at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in May, where he was awarded an Honorary Professorship.

“V&A at Dundee wants at this early stage in its development to learn from the design community about their aspirations for the future and how V&A at Dundee might contribute to this,” said Mr Long.

“The Fruitmarket Gallery's DesignMarket is a great initiative and opportunity to meet with this community and so we are delighted to be involved.”

Iain Morrison, Enterprise Manager at The Fruitmarket Gallery said, "We are delighted to be welcoming V&A at Dundee to join the mix at this year's DesignMarket. DesignMarket has grown threefold since its first occurrence in 2011 and the glittering array of designers are very happy to be joining a conversation with V&A at Dundee as it reaches out to Scotland's design community.”

DesignMarket launches on Friday 13 July 5-9pm, and runs Sat 14 July 11am-6pm, Sun 15 July 12-5pm at The Fruitmarket Gallery, 45 Market Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1DF.

The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum

The glamour, mystery and drama of some of the world’s most striking fashion photographs will be displayed in Dundee later this year in a major exhibition from the V&A.

'Selling Dreams: One Hundred Years of Fashion Photography’ is the second in a series of exhibitions being held at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum leading up to the opening of the V&A at Dundee.

The exhibition features work by giants of twentieth century photography including Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and David Bailey, alongside contemporary images by Corinne Day, Rankin, Tim Walker and Steven Meisel.

Susanna Brown, Curator of Photographs at the V&A, said, “This exhibition brings together diverse works by more than twenty leading image-makers and will include some wonderful iconic images as well as rarely exhibited photographs from the V&A collection.”

Lord Provost Bob Duncan, chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee, said, “This is another exciting exhibition for The McManus and I am sure it will attract many people to the galleries.

“The McManus is becoming widely known as a quality destination and we are looking forward to 'Selling Dreams' as well as the Royal Collection's Leonardo drawings later this year.

“I am pleased to see the close partnership with the V&A is yet again bringing an outstanding exhibition to Dundee.”

Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee, said, “The style and glamour of fashion has attracted the world's best photographers for nearly as long as the history of photography itself. `Selling Dreams’ is a fabulous opportunity to see some of these most iconic images, as well as discover lesser know ones from the V&A's superlative collections.”

The V&A is home to the UK’s National Collection of the Art of Photography.  'Selling Dreams’ is drawn from this collection and is the first V&A touring exhibition to explore the work of international fashion photographers from the earliest years of the twentieth century to the present day. It will include approximately 60 photographs.

The exhibition title is inspired by a quote from photographer Irving Penn.  In 1984, he commented on his role at Vogue as ‘selling dreams not clothes’. This simple statement highlights the complexity of the fashion photographer’s role, which goes far beyond the simple recording of fabrics and surface detail.

Eight sections will chart key themes in fashion photography over the last 100 years. The first sections reflect how fashion photography flourished with the rise of illustrated magazines and include bold experimental works inspired by Surrealism and the European avant-garde.

Influential editors and art directors such as Alexander Liberman and Diana Vreeland collaborated with photographers to shape the optimistic and energetic image of Post-War New York, while in the swinging Sixties, London became the centre of the fashion world.  In the 1970s, photographers pushed the boundaries with highly-charged and provocative shots. By the end of the century, fashion images took on an increasingly reportage aesthetic. The exhibition will end with a focus on the elaborate narrative approaches of contemporary photographers.

The exhibition is organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Heritage Lottery Fund supports Scotland’s designs on a new international museum

Early support from Heritage Lottery Fund, which takes the vision and the remarkable building proposed for V&A at Dundee a significant step closer.

A new international museum celebrating the best in Scottish design took a major step forward today as the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded it a first round pass* of up to £9.2m, including £200,000 development funding. The V&A at Dundee is an inspirational project which will showcase Scotland’s great design heritage to the world while inspiring and developing home-grown talent and providing the cornerstone to the regeneration of Dundee’s waterfront area.

For its size, Scotland has had a disproportionate impact on the history of design. From architecture and urban design, through science, engineering and medicine, to publishing and fashion, Scottish designers and innovators have shaped the country’s industry and identity as well as influencing design around the world. Names such as Robert Adam, Christopher Dresser, Harris Tweed, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Phoebe Traquair and Bill Gibb are internationally renowned but until now, there has been nowhere in Scotland dedicated to celebrating this rich heritage which spans centuries.

Colin McLean, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, said:

“For years Scotland has been making its mark in the world of international design. In our everyday lives, we use these designs – telephone, television, lawnmower, fountain pen, stamps - without being aware that they were created by fellow Scots.

“The V&A at Dundee will harness this incredible heritage and present it to the world as a celebration of Scottish talent. Housed in a stunning building, which itself reflects cutting-edge design, it has the potential to be a ‘must-see’ destination, attracting visitors and design professionals from across the globe.”

Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee, said:

“Scotland’s design heritage is centuries old, full of inspirational stories of talent, innovation and enterprise. Our designers have shaped the identity and industry of our country, and have contributed creatively around the world.

“The development of V&A at Dundee is an outstanding opportunity to help us understand and celebrate this remarkable heritage and from it take inspiration for the future. We are delighted to have this early support from Heritage Lottery Fund, which takes our vision and the remarkable building proposed for V&A at Dundee a significant step closer.”

The V&A at Dundee will be housed in a signature building projecting into the Tay estuary and designed by Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma. As well as dedicated exhibition space for long-term displays, it will allow major touring exhibitions of outstanding international design to come to Scotland for the first time. As a national centre of design excellence, there will be a strong focus on learning and knowledge exchange, encouraging creativity and innovation in the industry today.

With visitor numbers expected to reach 500,000 in the first year, the V&A at Dundee will further boost Scotland’s tourist industry. Visitor numbers to Scottish tourist attractions rose last year by 4million** - a year which saw the opening of four major Heritage Lottery Fund projects: the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum; Riverside Museum; National Museum of Scotland; and Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

The new museum will be located in Dundee, City of Discovery, which has proven design credentials including the jute industry, publishing, medical innovations and computer games. The development of the V&A at Dundee will play a vital role in the regeneration of the city’s waterfront and is already attracting interest from other potential investors and employers.

The V&A at Dundee was one of eight successful HLF first-round pass applications with decisions totalling £76m.  Other successful candidates were: Ditherington Flax Mill Maltings, Shropshire; The Royal Academy of Arts, London; Northumberland National Park; The Maze/Long Kesh, Lisburn; Knole, Kent; National Army Museum, London; and Winchester Cathedral, Hampshire.

IGNITE 2012

Ignite 2012

Cultural organisations across Tayside and Fife are combining to ‘Ignite 2012’ with a 10-day festival  in May.

Building on the success of last year’s `Ignite Your Weekend’ programme - which attracted over 15,000 people to events in Dundee - this year’s programme is growing to involve more groups across a wider area and over a longer period.

The `Ignite’ idea stems from the Dundee.com campaign of the same name and arose as a result of the desire for cultural organisations large and small to work together to raise the profile of the region and increase visitor numbers to the benefit of all.

This year’s events, taking place from May 17th to 27th, will include:

  • Degree Show 2012 at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design
  • Creative Dundee’s Pecha Kucha Volume 3
  • Museum of the University of St Andrews Murder Mystery Night
  • V&A at Dundee’s Ignite lecture - Design Uncovered: Adventures in Architecture

Events have been organised by an array of institutions, from universities and major arts establishments to small collectives and cover a wide range of arts and culture from theatre to contemporary art, museums to dance.

“The forthcoming arrival of V&A at Dundee has shone a spotlight on cultural activity in and around Dundee and Ignite is a great way of celebrating and highlighting the region’s thriving creative sector,” said Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee.

“There is a genuine culture of collaboration and support across the cultural sector here, and V&A at Dundee is proud to be a part of this. Through Ignite we hope to put the area well and truly on the cultural map, helping to transform outdated perceptions and show the region for the cultural hotbed that it has become.

“This year’s festival is just a snapshot of the kind of activity that Ignites the city and wider region on a regular basis and we hope that it will encourage new visitors to the city as well as providing a great programme for local audiences to enjoy.”

A full programme of events will be published over the next month, with  news and additions highlighted on the dedicated website, Facebook and Twitter.

Fiona Hyslop confirms additional financial support for V&A at Dundee

Another £1.75 million of Government funding has been committed to the V&A at Dundee over the next three years, the Culture Secretary has announced.

It brings the total Scottish Government support for the project to more than £18 million, including the £15 million capital investment already confirmed.

The new revenue funding was announced by Fiona Hyslop today on a visit to Dundee’s waterfront where the new museum will be built. Preparatory work at the site began on Monday.

The Culture Secretary said:

“The V&A at Dundee is an international cultural project which has the potential to bring great benefits to the city and the whole of Scotland. It will attract visitors from all over the world and presents an opportunity to strengthen Dundee’s reputation as a centre for the creative industries.

“In the Year of Creative Scotland 2012, I am delighted to confirm the Scottish Government is making a further £1.75 million available to the V&A at Dundee. These additional funds will be used to support key activities associated with the project including programming exhibitions, developing education programmes, working with designers and creative practitioners, and fundraising.

“Our significant financial contribution will enable the V&A at Dundee – with its iconic waterfront building – to work towards opening in 2015, placing the project at the centre of Dundee’s regeneration.

“It is fantastic to see investigative work underway to prepare the site for construction. With employment in that sector in Scotland predicted to grow at nearly twice the UK average over the next few years, it is clear this Government’s decision to continue investing in capital projects such as this is paying dividends for jobs and the economy.”

Philip Long, Director of the V&A at Dundee, said:

'We intend that V&A at Dundee will be an international centre of design for the widest public, housed in a world-class building at the heart of Dundee's developing waterfront. The Culture Secretary's announcement today assures that work can continue on the development of V&A at Dundee, from planning through to implementation and opening.

“V&A at Dundee will show major exhibitions of international design, celebrate our own design heritage, inspire and help develop contemporary talent, and encourage design innovation for the future. We are delighted to have the Scottish Government's continuing wholehearted support for this vision."
